Terms of service
The agreement, in language you can hold us to.
Written to be understood rather than to be impenetrable. Where it is short, that is because there is nothing more to say, not because something is hidden.
Effective 18 September 2026
1. The agreement
These terms are between you and Mohsen Firoozbakht of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, who operates ExpenseGauge. By creating an account or using the service you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.
Our privacy policy is part of this agreement.
2. Your account
You must be at least 16 years old. One account belongs to one person; you are responsible for what happens under it.
There is no password. Anyone who can read your email can obtain a login code, so keeping your mailbox secure is what keeps your account secure. Tell us at once if you believe someone else has reached your account.
3. What is yours and what is ours
Your receipts, their images and everything derived from them remain yours. We claim no ownership of them. We hold them only to provide the service, on the terms set out in the privacy policy, and you can export all of it at any time.
You grant us only the permission we need to run the service for you: to store your content, process it, read your receipt images, and show your content back to you and to the people you deliberately share it with.
The service itself — the software, the name, the design — remains ours.
4. How you may use it
Use it for your own records. Do not:
- upload anything you have no right to upload, or anything unlawful;
- try to break into, overload, or work around the limits of the service;
- use it to build a competing product, or extract its content in bulk by automated means;
- resell access to it, or share one account among a group of people;
- use it to process other people's personal information without their knowledge.
5. It is a record, not advice
ExpenseGauge keeps a record and describes what it sees. It is not an accountant, not a tax filing, and not financial advice. What it says about your spending is a reading of your own numbers, not a recommendation.
Receipts are read by machine and machines misread things. Check anything that matters — a tax claim, a reimbursement, a settlement between friends — against the paper. The final responsibility for your records is yours.
6. Paid plans
The free plan is free and stays usable. A paid plan is billed in advance through Stripe, and renews automatically for the same period until you cancel.
You can cancel at any time from within the service. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not refund the period you are in, and you keep the paid features until that period ends.
A yearly plan is different, because a year is a long time to be held to. Within the first 30 days of a yearly period you may ask for the unused part back, and we will refund it in proportion to the days remaining.
The price you agreed when you subscribed is the price you go on paying. If we change what a plan costs, that new price applies to people who subscribe after the change; it does not reach you until at least twelve months after you joined, and never without telling you at least 30 days beforehand.
If we change the price of a plan you are on, we will tell you before the change applies to you, and you may cancel rather than accept it.
If a payment fails and is not resolved, the account returns to the free plan. Your books are not deleted for non-payment.
7. Availability
We intend the service to be there when you need it, but we do not promise it will never be down, never lose a request, or never make a mistake. It is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows.
Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. The export exists for exactly that reason.
8. Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profits, or for a decision you made on the strength of what the service told you.
Where we are liable, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event — which, on the free plan, is nothing.
Nothing in these terms removes a right you have under consumer protection law that cannot be removed by agreement.
9. Ending it
You may close your account at any time, for any reason. What happens to your data then is set out in the privacy policy.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks section 4, or where we are required to by law. Except where the breach is serious or we have no choice, we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right, and you will be able to export your books.
If we ever discontinue the service, we will give at least 60 days' notice so that you can take your records with you.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the laws of Canada that apply there. The courts of Ontario have jurisdiction, without affecting any right you have to bring a claim where you live.
11. Changes
We may change these terms. If a change matters, we will tell you in the service at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you do not accept it, close your account before it applies; continuing to use the service afterwards means accepting it.
